3 reasons to improve your sleep quality

Hey, hey! How are you guys? I know, I’ve been away for a while because, well, I’ll say it as it was – I was close to a burnout. I tried to get back on my feet a couple of times but it didn’t go too well and I took a bigger breask than the one planned.

Let’s just say my motivation was down the drain and every time I tried to get back on track I got nowhere. The funniest part? Me posting on Instagram how I am back, motivated and focused and then vanishing for several weeks. I know, I know – not very reliable. But the truth is, whatever I post on Instagram, life isn’t always flowers and music. I am tired af.

Somehow I suddenly remember about the best sleep I ever had- a few months back, in Amsterdam, in a Kimpton de Witt. Why? What does sleep have to do with this? Well, along with nutrition and exercise, good sleep is one of the pillars of health and wellness. The quality and lack of sleep affects us in ways I wasn’t aware and I will share a couple of them below.

Hey!

Physical Health

Sleep plays an important role in the physical health. On the long run, sleep deficiency goes hand in hand with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. There are multiple researches that prove all above. There’s also evidence to suggest that getting a good night’s sleep can help a person consume fewer calories during the day.

If we take a look at the National Sleep Foundation, adequate sleep for adults is between 7 and 9 hours a night, and athletes may benefit from as many as 10 hours. Accordingly, sleep is as important to athletes as consuming enough calories and nutrients. Sleep helps the body repair, regenerate, and recover. The immune system is no exception to this relationship. If you often get colds, ensuring that you get at least eight hours of sleep per night could be very helpful.

Other benefits include: better performance intensity, more energy, better coordination, faster speed and better mental functioning.

You are not you when you aren’t sleeping enough.

As you saw I decided to take a break from Instagram because I was burning out. No worries, I am back 🙋🏻‍♀️⁣ ⁣ There is nothing that will change you as much as the right people around you. Emotional intelligence and mood boost

I think I said before, but I’m becoming some sort of monster when I don’t sleep enough. I cannot cope with anyone and anything while I am sleep deprived.

But this happens because sleep has links to people’s emotional and social intelligence. If you don’t get adequate sleep is more likely you will have issues with recognizing other people’s emotions and expressions.

Because while you sleep your brain processes your emotions. Your mind needs this time in order to recognize and react the right way. When you cut that short, you tend to have more negative emotional reactions and fewer positive ones. Sounds familiar?

Chronic lack of sleep can also raise the chance of having a mood disorder. One large study showed that when you have insomnia, you’re five times more likely to develop depression, and your odds of anxiety or panic disorders are even greater. So, take a step back and get a good night’s sleep before anything because you might need it more than you think.

Daytime performance and safety

Getting enough quality sleep at the right times helps you function well throughout the day. People who are sleep deficient are less productive. They take longer to finish tasks, have a slower reaction time, and make more mistakes.

I remember my freelancing days when I used to turn my nights into days. I used to work three times harder and with half of the result. Because it turns out that after several nights of losing sleep -even a loss of just 1–2 hours per night- your ability to function suffers as if you haven’t slept at all for a day or two. Imagine what a few years can do to your body and brain.

Lack of sleep also may lead to microsleep. Microsleep refers to brief moments of sleep that occur when you’re normally awake without actually being aware of it.

You can’t control microsleep and it can be super dangerous. Did you ever get to a destination and don’t remember how you got there in the first place? You might have been microsleeping. Imagine micro sleeping while driving. Not fun.

🇺🇸 Here's the deal. Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart.⁣ But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind 🙌🏼⁣ ⁣ ✄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄┄⁣ ⁣ 🇷🇴 Uite care e treaba. Călătoria nu este intotdeauna frumoasa. Nu este întotdeauna confortabila. Sleep is a vital, often neglected, component of every person’s overall health and well-being. Sleep is important because it enables the body to repair and be fit and ready for another day. Unfortunately there’s no cheating out of it and you have to give your body the rest it needs.
